Canyon Loop

Monday we set out to do a 6 mile loop hike according to the map from the museum. We made a couple wrong turns, but that added 2 miles at most, and the whole thing was 10 miles... (16k)

Blue skies to start. Looking over to ni'hau, the "lost island". It is owned by a European family, but its inhabitants are about 200 native Hawaiians. The primary language is Hawaiian.
Looking over the canyon from the pu'u hinahina lookout where we started.
The Mile markers are a bit incongruous. This says 1.8 miles for the canyon trail. On the other side it said 2.9 miles.  And then when we were on the road (0.5 miles from this sign) it said 2.0 miles....
We made a few wrong turns around halemanu road but finally made it to the next trail.
Up and then down again thru the rain forest. And it was raining.
Down to camp slogget, run by the ywca and available for rental. And some blue sky!
And pretty flowers.
We meandered along the road (another wrong turn and backtracking) and eventually made it to the kumuwela trail.
Pretty flowers, but I don't think the trail had been used in awhile.
We made it to the other side and the kumuwela lookout.
And here the canyon trail of 2.9 miles....
Views from our lunch spot.

And we continued along the canyon.
Gorgeous views even with the clouds. And tons of helicopters.

Plenty of red sand.
More canyon.
We then came to the falls. With all the rain, they were running quite swiftly. It took us awhile to find a spot to cross. (Including one rock with a rat on it....)

We found a crossing near the top and landed back in tourist land.
Finally time for a beer.
Lovely views here.
And then back along the red dirt towards the car park.
All told 16k and plenty of elevation!
