Rangitoto 1

While in Auckland, Mom and I headed over to Rangitoto.  While it is in so many pictures from Auckland, Mom had never been there.  It is the youngest volcano in the region.  Luckily we had relatively cool temperatures as a lot of the walk is quite exposed.  It was very windy so we docked as Islington Bay instead of the Rangitoto main dock.

We walked along the gravel/lava road to Rangitoto Wharf.

Despite the choppy seas, a boat had made it to the wharf for one of the tour groups.  Since they were taking the tractors up to the summit, I guess they couldn't be asked to walk from Islington!

The wharf area used to be the main center for the swimming pool and other social activities when Rangitoto was a summer holiday island.  It has since been taken over by DOC, and only a few bachs remain.

All of Aucklands volcanos!

Heading up the trail to the summit.

Cloudy and rainy auckland in the distance!

And made it up to the summit!  Quite windy but great views!
