Saab Fee Glacier

Tuesday we took a train and a bus and made our way to the town of Saas fee. We were hoping to avoid the forecasted rain in Zermatt. Although cloudy, the town was beautiful.

After a short walk through town we headed to the gondolas to the glacier. In addition to being able to walk on the glacier, there is skiing at the top year round.
View of the city above.
Up up up! Easier when in a gondola. There was an option to walk up but did not sound pleasant. Plus the guidebook said "route not recommended"
Pretty far away now...
The other cable care up to felskinn, where the skiing and glacier walking starts.
We arrived up at the glacier and it was expectedly quite chilly with some rain/sleet. There is a hutte a mile and a half away that we all had intended to walk to. But given the wet slippery conditions only bob and I decided to go for it.
Bob in the distance. The first part was actually the most difficult on slick rock and ice. The rest was slush.
Frequent cloud changes meant we often couldn't see the restaurant which was less than 500 meters away.
Hanging out on a glacier.
Restaurant came back!
Still there.

Breathtaking views intermittently.
Wall of glacier.
Bob went a little farther ahead. I wasn't keen for more slick rocks.
But got more good pictures and views.
Ice bridge on the trail.
The guided group had helmets and ice axes. We decided we would only do this half mile rather than go the whole way. They confirmed that the trail got more dodgy up ahead.
Restaurant from our turnaround spot.
Bob in the very distance.
And now the restaurant is gone. Same spot as 1 minute prior.
Bob coming back!
And back we go. A few slick spots but not bad.
Made it to the end!
Lots of end pictures :)

And then a well earned beer!  Although we only walked a mile, walking in those conditions we decided it counted for 3 :)
